Phuket International Airport has put fresh numbers around the capacity squeeze travellers already feel at busy times. In Thailand’s 2026 fiscal year, from October 2025 through September 2026, the airport handled 17,234,915 passengers on 105,010 flights — averages of 47,219 passengers and 288 flights a day.
The airport’s 8 October update also gave a clearer status report on its planned international-terminal expansion. The project is now in detailed-design acceptance, and airport management says the expansion is intended to add capacity for another 5.5 million passengers per year. Construction is currently targeted to begin in late 2027, with the local airport update pointing to overall completion in 2032.
What is actually changing
This is an expansion of Phuket Airport’s international passenger facilities, not a new airport and not an immediate increase in runway capacity. The project is intended to relieve crowding inside the international terminal and improve the airport’s ability to process rising visitor numbers through peak periods.
For the approaching 2026–27 winter schedule, from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, Phuket Airport forecasts 54,296 flights and 8,912,547 passengers. Management says it is already using available space and resources more intensively during peak hours while the longer-term construction project moves through design and procurement.
The timeline is still a planning timeline
There is one detail worth treating carefully. The 8 October provincial airport update says the project is planned for completion in 2032, while an Airports of Thailand corporate development update published earlier in 2026 referred to Phuket’s international-terminal and contact-gate expansion being completed in 2031. Those public timelines are close, but they are not identical.
For travellers, the practical conclusion is simple: do not plan a future trip around a promised new-terminal opening date yet. Detailed design is still being accepted and construction has not started. Large airport projects can move as approvals, procurement and construction sequencing are finalised.
What it means for passengers this high season
The expansion will not solve queues this summer because the build is still ahead. Phuket Airport expects total annual passenger traffic in the roughly 17–17.8 million range and says high-season demand has recovered to more than 90% of pre-pandemic levels.
If you are flying during a holiday peak, use your airline’s current check-in guidance and allow sensible time for security, immigration, baggage and road traffic to the airport. That does not mean every departure will be congested; it means the airport itself is acknowledging peak-hour pressure while it works within today’s footprint.
The airport currently operates a single runway and two passenger-terminal buildings. Airports of Thailand lists 38 aircraft parking bays, including 11 contact gates and 27 remote stands. That physical setup helps explain why terminal and gate expansion matters even before any wider debate about additional aviation capacity.
Why this matters beyond the terminal
Phuket Airport is the island’s main aviation gateway and one of Thailand’s busiest airports. More capacity can support tourism and local employment, but growth also concentrates pressure on roads, public transport, utilities and communities around Mai Khao and northern Phuket.
The airport says its development approach includes community and environmental responsibilities alongside passenger growth. That promise will matter most once construction begins, when residents will be watching how works, traffic and airport operations are managed in practice.
What to watch next
- formal acceptance of the detailed design;
- procurement and a confirmed construction start date;
- whether the public completion target settles on 2031 or 2032;
- temporary terminal-management changes during high-season peaks; and
- how the project affects international contact gates, passenger processing and landside access.
Until those milestones are locked in, the useful news is not that a bigger terminal is “opening soon”. It is that Phuket Airport has moved the project further into design, has quantified the extra capacity it wants, and is doing so while annual traffic is already above 17.2 million passengers.
