Phuket is Thailand's largest island, sitting off the Andaman Sea coast in the country's south. It's connected to the mainland by a short bridge, has its own international airport, and functions as a self-contained holiday destination — most visitors never need to leave the island.
What surprises first-timers most is how varied it is. The west coast (Patong, Karon, Kata) is built for tourism: resorts, restaurants, nightlife, tour operators on every corner. Head inland or to the east coast and it feels like a different island — rubber plantations, fishing communities, and Old Phuket Town's quiet colonial-era streets.
How much time do you need?
Five to seven days is enough to settle into one beach area, take a day trip or two (Phi Phi Islands or Phang Nga Bay are the classics), and explore Old Town. Longer trips let you split time between two coasts — busy and social on one end, quiet on the other.
What to expect on arrival

Common first-timer mistakes
- Booking a hotel in Patong expecting a quiet beach holiday — Patong is loud and lively by design.
- Underestimating travel time during rainy-season downpours, which can flood low-lying roads temporarily.
- Not checking which months fall in green season — beautiful light, lower prices, but rougher seas for boat trips.
