Flights from Australia to Phuket

Which Australian cities fly direct, which need a stopover, and what to expect on price and flight time.

Phuket is one of the few Southeast Asian beach destinations with genuine direct-flight options from Australia — which routes are direct, and which need a stopover, comes down almost entirely to which city you're flying from.

Perth: the shortest route by far

Perth has by far the best direct connection, run by Jetstar with several flights a week and a flight time of around 6 hours 25 minutes — noticeably shorter than the east-coast routes thanks to Perth's position on the Indian Ocean side of the country. For Perth-based travellers, this is usually the fastest and simplest way to reach Phuket, often beating a "faster-looking" one-stop routing once layover time is added in.

Melbourne and Sydney: direct, but limited

Jetstar also flies direct from Melbourne and Sydney, though with far fewer weekly departures than Perth and a longer flight time — around 8 hours 50 minutes from Melbourne and 9 hours 15 minutes from Sydney. Because these direct services run on a limited schedule, it's worth comparing them against a one-stop option through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok on Singapore Airlines, AirAsia or Thai Airways, which often run far more frequently and can work out similarly timed door-to-door once you account for the direct flight's fixed departure day.

Adelaide, Brisbane and other cities

Adelaide and Brisbane don't currently have a direct service to Phuket; travellers from these cities typically connect via Perth, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. A same-day connection through Perth can be worth considering for Adelaide flyers specifically, given how short the Perth–Phuket leg is.

Airlines worth comparing

  • Jetstar: the only carrier flying nonstop from Australia to Phuket, on the Perth, Melbourne and Sydney routes above.
  • Singapore Airlines / Scoot: reliable one-stop options via Singapore, generally with good frequency from all major Australian cities.
  • AirAsia: budget one-stop routing via Kuala Lumpur, often competitive on price.
  • Thai Airways: one-stop via Bangkok, useful if you want to add a Bangkok stopover to the trip — see our connecting flights guide.

Airline schedules and route frequencies change seasonally — always check current timetables directly with the airline or a flight search site before booking, particularly for the limited-frequency direct Melbourne and Sydney services.

What a ticket typically costs

Return economy fares from Australia to Phuket generally run cheaper from Perth than from the east coast, given the shorter direct routing and lower fuel/time cost. Fares fluctuate with school holidays and Thai high season (roughly November to April), so booking a few months ahead and staying flexible on travel dates makes a noticeable difference — the cheapest fares are usually outside these peak windows.

Getting from the airport to your hotel

  • Metered taxi: available at the official taxi counter just outside arrivals. Fares are distance-based and posted on a board.
  • Airport bus / shared minivan: the cheapest option, running to major beach areas on a schedule rather than door-to-door.
  • Private transfer: pre-booked through your hotel or a tour operator — fixed price, driver waiting with a name sign.
  • Grab (ride-hailing app): works in Phuket and is often the most transparent pricing option, though airport pickup rules can be stricter than in Bangkok.
