Thai Buddhism in Phuket

Temple etiquette and the role of Buddhism in daily island life.

Theravada Buddhism shapes daily life across Thailand, and Phuket is no exception, despite the island's more commercial, tourist-facing reputation.

Temples on the island

Wat Chalong is Phuket's largest and most-visited temple complex, honouring two revered monks from the island's history. Smaller neighbourhood wats are found across every district, still actively used for daily merit-making rather than existing purely as sights.

Visiting temple etiquette

  • Cover shoulders and knees — sarongs are often available to borrow at the entrance if you arrive underdressed
  • Remove shoes before entering buildings with a Buddha image
  • Never point your feet toward a Buddha statue or a monk
  • Women should avoid direct physical contact with monks

Monks and daily life

It's common to see monks collecting alms on foot in the early morning, particularly around Phuket Town — a quiet, ordinary part of daily religious practice rather than a staged event for visitors.
