The safest way to handle a Thai stay is to treat the permission-to-stay date in your passport or immigration record as a hard deadline, not as a flexible checkout date. An overstay is not the same thing as applying late for an extension, and paying a fine on departure is not a substitute for lawful permission to remain in Thailand.

Thailand has now published the final 2026 short-stay rules: the broad 60-day visa exemption ends on 15 September 2026, with a 30-day exemption for 60 countries and territories plus separate 15-day, Visa on Arrival and bilateral arrangements. First: know the date you are actually allowed to stay until

Thailand can admit travellers under several different bases: visa exemption, Visa on Arrival, a tourist visa, DTV or another non-immigrant/long-stay route. The permitted stay is not necessarily the same as the visa's overall validity. What matters once you are in Thailand is the stay permission granted for that entry.

Check the admission record or stamp as soon as you enter. If anything looks wrong, deal with it immediately rather than discovering the problem at Phuket International Airport on departure. Keep your passport details, accommodation address and travel dates accessible, and give yourself several working days before expiry if you intend to ask for an extension.

Visa exemption in 2026: 30 days for the main group from 15 September

Thailand's 60-day visa-exemption framework remains relevant for eligible travellers entering before the new scheme takes effect. The final Department of Consular Affairs summary says the revised rules begin on 15 September 2026. From that date, ordinary passport holders from 60 countries and territories move to a 30-day visa exemption; Mauritius and Seychelles receive 15 days; Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia form the reduced Visa on Arrival list; and several passports continue under bilateral agreements.

Travellers who enter before the effective date under the current exemption may remain until the expiry of the permission immigration grants them. After entry, the admitted-until date on your own record is the practical deadline to manage.

Can a tourist stay be extended?

For tourism-purpose extensions, the Immigration Bureau's public handbook identifies the TM.7 application, passport and the acknowledgement of overstay penalties among the core documents, and lists a THB 1,900 application fee. The exact supporting documents and whether an extension is available depend on your admission category and circumstances, and approval is not automatic.

The practical rule is simple: apply while your current permission is still valid. Do not wait until the evening before expiry, and do not assume that submitting an incomplete application somehow freezes the clock. Immigration offices can ask for supporting evidence beyond a generic checklist.

Where to apply while staying in Phuket

Immigration Bureau guidance says extension applicants should use the immigration checkpoint responsible for the area where they reside. In Phuket, verify the current office/service point and opening arrangements through official Immigration channels before travelling across the island, especially around Thai public holidays.

Bring the original passport and the documents requested for your category. A TM.7 normally requires a photograph, and local offices may require copies of the passport identity page, entry permission and accommodation-related evidence. Requirements can change, so use the local office's current checklist rather than relying on a hotel desk, visa agent or old forum post.

The standard extension fee is an application fee, not a guarantee

The Immigration Bureau's tourism-extension handbook lists THB 1,900. That is the government application fee shown in the official handbook; it should not be confused with optional agent charges. Paying the application fee does not mean an extension must be approved. Immigration officers retain authority to consider the application and request supplementary evidence.

What counts as overstay?

Overstay begins when you remain in Thailand beyond the permission granted for your stay without another lawful status or extension covering that period. Thai immigration material describes a fine of THB 500 per day, up to a THB 20,000 maximum. Immigration guidance also notes limited handling for a one-day overstay, but that is not a sensible planning strategy and should never be treated as a "free extra day".

Immigration Act section 81 also makes remaining after permission has expired an offence. A fine paid at departure may be how a short, voluntarily disclosed overstay is processed in practice, but the legal problem is the overstay itself—not whether you can afford the fine.

Longer overstays can trigger re-entry bans

Immigration Bureau guidance distinguishes short overstays from much longer ones. For a person who surrenders/comes to immigration voluntarily, official guidance shows escalating re-entry bans beginning after an overstay of more than 90 days: one year for more than 90 days, three years for more than one year, five years for more than three years and ten years for more than five years.

The consequences can be more serious when a person is arrested rather than presenting voluntarily. Long overstays can involve detention and removal as well as future-entry consequences. If your stay has already expired by more than a trivial amount, get qualified immigration/legal advice instead of trying to solve it with a border run.

If you realise you will overstay, act before the deadline

Several days remain: check whether your current category is extendable and prepare the official application immediately.
Your flight is after the permitted date: changing the flight can be cheaper and far safer than creating an immigration violation.
Your permission has already expired: do not keep travelling around Thailand as if nothing happened. Contact Immigration or qualified counsel and resolve the situation lawfully.
You are ill or facing an emergency: keep documentary evidence and contact Immigration; specific extension grounds and evidence can differ from an ordinary tourism extension.

Do not confuse a border run with an extension

Leaving Thailand ends that particular stay. Re-entering is a new admission decision, not an automatic "extension" of the old one. Immigration can examine travel history, purpose, documents and eligibility at the border. Repeated short exits are therefore not a reliable substitute for choosing a visa designed for the length and purpose of your stay.

Do not work on a tourist status just because you obtained more days

An extension changes the period you are permitted to stay under the relevant category; it does not magically convert a tourist purpose into Thai employment authorisation. If you plan to work for a Thai entity, operate a business or otherwise undertake activity that needs work permission, check the employment/immigration rules separately. Remote workers should investigate the DTV or another suitable route rather than relying on assumptions about tourist status.

Identify the admission category you entered under.
Check the current Immigration Bureau/local-office requirements for that category.
Prepare your passport, TM.7 and photo plus any current supporting documents requested.
Budget for the official THB 1,900 extension application fee where applicable.
Apply before expiry and leave time for missing-document problems or public holidays.
Keep the receipt and re-check the new permission details before leaving the counter.

Special circumstances need category-specific advice

Never surrender your passport to an unknown intermediary without understanding where it is going, and be cautious of anyone advertising a guaranteed result, a backdated solution after expiry, or a way to avoid attending Immigration when the authorities require your presence. Keep copies or photos of your passport identity page, current admission permission, application documents and receipts.

An agent can be useful if you have a complicated history, limited mobility, language concerns or a category with extensive paperwork, but an agent cannot lawfully guarantee an immigration decision. For a straightforward tourism extension, the official process and fee are published by Immigration, so ask an agent to separate the government fee from its own service charge and to explain exactly what it is filing on your behalf.
