The tradition behind Thai massage

Where the practice comes from, and how it differs from a standard spa massage.

Traditional Thai massage (nuad thai) has roots as a formal healing practice, distinct in both technique and origin from the oil-based spa massage styles more familiar to Western visitors.

Where it comes from

Thai massage traditionally draws on influences from Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, combined with yoga-like assisted stretching — historically taught and practiced in temple settings, notably associated with Wat Pho in Bangkok's long-running traditional medicine school.

How it differs from a spa massage

Performed on a mat on the floor rather than a table, fully clothed, using the practitioner's hands, forearms, knees and feet to apply pressure and assisted stretches along the body's energy lines — considerably more physically involved than a typical oil massage.

What to expect as a first-timer

Some positions and stretches can feel intense if you're not used to them — communicating your comfort level, particularly around pressure and flexibility, is normal practice and something practitioners expect and respond to.

Where to try it

Widely available at both streetside massage shops and hotel spas across the island — see our spa & wellness guide for the broader range of options.
