Spirit houses & everyday superstitions

The small shrines you'll see outside almost every building, explained.

Small ornate shrines standing outside homes, hotels and shops across Phuket are a genuine part of daily belief, not decoration.

What spirit houses are

San phra phum (spirit houses) are believed to house the guardian spirit of the land a building sits on — displaced when construction happens, and given a dedicated small shrine as a residence to keep the spirit content and the property fortunate.

What you'll see at them

Small offerings — flowers, incense, drinks, sometimes food — placed daily or on auspicious dates, along with small figurines representing servants and animals for the spirit's household.

Other common everyday superstitions

  • Certain numbers (4, associated with death in some regional beliefs) are avoided in room numbers or licence plates at some properties
  • Buildings are sometimes designed or oriented with input from a spiritual consultant regarding auspicious layout
  • Amulets, worn or displayed, are common and taken seriously as genuine protective objects rather than purely decorative jewellery

Visitor etiquette

Spirit houses are private religious property even when visible from a public street — respectful observation from a distance is fine, but treat them as you would any small shrine rather than a photo prop, and never touch or move offerings.
