Kathu sits inland between Patong and the airport road, functioning as one of the island's main residential and expat-heavy suburbs rather than a beach destination — most visitors pass through it without realising, on the drive up from the airport or across to Patong.
What it's like
A genuinely local town centre with markets, schools and everyday amenities, alongside a growing number of condos and serviced apartments aimed at longer-stay residents. It's flatter and greener than the coast, sitting in a valley beneath the hills that separate it from Patong, and noticeably cooler in the early morning.
Tin-mining history
Kathu has a claim to being where Phuket's modern history really starts: it was one of the island's main 19th-century tin-mining districts, worked heavily by Chinese labourers organised into secret-society brotherhoods. A dispute among rival mining societies here in 1876 escalated into a serious uprising that spread toward Phuket Town — a formative event in the island's Chinese community history, and part of the same lineage that gave rise to the Vegetarian Festival traditions still centred on Old Phuket Town's shrines today.
Shopping and everyday life
Kathu is also where Phuket's two largest shopping malls sit side by side — Central Phuket Floresta and Central Phuket Festival — making it a practical stop for anything from a pharmacy run to a full day of air-conditioned shopping and cinema, regardless of which beach you're actually staying at.
Golf, waterfalls and the hills
The district is also home to two of the island's older golf courses, Loch Palm and Phuket Country Club, both built around a reservoir at the base of the hills. Kathu Waterfall, smaller and quieter than Bang Pae or Ton Sai further north in Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, sits just outside town and makes an easy, uncrowded stop after rain.
