Cycling in Phuket is a mixed picture — genuinely pleasant in some areas, genuinely unpleasant (and unsafe) in others, mostly down to traffic density.
Where it's pleasant
Quieter inland routes around Kathu, parts of the east coast near Cape Panwa, and organised tours through rural back-roads and rubber plantations, away from the main coastal highway traffic.
Where it really isn't
The main west-coast roads connecting Patong, Karon and Kata carry heavy, fast-moving traffic with minimal cycling infrastructure — independent cycling along these routes is genuinely risky rather than simply inconvenient.
Guided cycling tours
Several operators run half-day guided cycling tours specifically routed away from the dangerous main roads, often combining quiet back-roads with stops at a temple, viewpoint or local market — a considerably safer way to cycle than renting a bike independently and improvising a route.
Rental bikes
Simple bike rental is available in most tourist areas at low cost, but is best used for short, local trips within a quiet neighbourhood rather than any real distance along the coast road.
