Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) in Phuket

Where the water is calm enough, and where to rent or take a lesson.

Stand-up paddleboarding suits Phuket's calmer bays well, offering a slower, more accessible way to spend time on the water than most boat-based activities.

Where the water is calm enough

Sheltered bays like Nai Harn, Ao Yon and parts of Bang Tao's lagoon system offer flatter water better suited to SUP than the more exposed, wave-affected stretches of Patong or Kata.

Rental and lessons

Board rental is widely available at the calmer beaches, with basic lessons offered by the same operators for anyone who hasn't tried it before — a short, easy activity to pick up compared to surfing.

Best time of day

Early morning generally offers the calmest water before any afternoon wind picks up, particularly during the shoulder months between high and green season.

SUP tours and excursions

Some operators run guided SUP excursions along the coast or around small coves, effectively a slower, more active alternative to a standard sea canoeing trip — worth asking about if you'd rather paddle standing up than sit in a kayak.
