Many of Phuket's resorts, particularly in Karon, Kata and parts of the north-west, offer a genuine choice between beachfront and hillside room locations — and the trade-off is bigger than it first appears.
Beachfront
Step-out convenience, generally the highest price tier, and — depending on the specific beach — potentially more noise from beach bars, water sports operators or passing foot traffic.
Hillside
Often better views (many of Phuket's most photographed vistas are from elevated positions), typically quieter, and usually cheaper than equivalent beachfront rooms — the trade-off being a walk, shuttle or drive down to the sand.
What tips the decision
- If you plan to be on the beach most of the day, every day, beachfront convenience adds up over a longer stay
- If you're mixing beach time with day trips and exploring, a hillside room's view and quiet can matter more than proximity
- Check the actual walk or shuttle frequency before booking a hillside room — "5 minutes to the beach" varies a lot between resorts
