Hotel rate types come with meaningfully different cancellation terms, and understanding the categories helps avoid an unwelcome surprise if plans change.
Fully flexible rates
Allow free cancellation up to a set point before check-in (commonly 24-48 hours), usually at a somewhat higher price than the equivalent non-refundable rate — worth it for genuinely uncertain travel plans.
Semi-flexible rates
Often allow free cancellation up to a longer window before check-in (a week or more), with a penalty or full charge if cancelled closer to the date — a reasonable middle ground for plans that are fairly settled but not locked in.
Non-refundable rates
The cheapest option, typically charged in full at booking with no refund for cancellation regardless of reason — genuinely only worth it when your travel dates are certain, since the savings evaporate entirely if plans change.
Force majeure and extreme weather
Some properties apply separate, more lenient policies for extreme weather events or official travel advisories — worth asking about specifically during green season if booking a non-refundable rate, since standard cancellation terms don't always automatically cover this.
A reasonable default
Unless you're certain of your dates and specifically chasing the lowest price, a semi-flexible rate is usually the better trade-off between cost and genuine flexibility.
