Phuket has a solid budget accommodation scene, concentrated in a few specific pockets rather than spread evenly across the island.
Where budget stays cluster
Patong's back streets (away from the beachfront) and parts of Karon hold the highest density of hostels and budget guesthouses, within walking distance of restaurants and transport links.
What to expect
Dorm beds and simple private rooms, often with shared bathrooms in the cheapest tier, up to simple air-conditioned private rooms a step above hostel level. Facilities like pools or on-site restaurants are the exception rather than the rule at this price point.
Old Phuket Town alternative
A growing number of boutique hostels have opened in restored Old Town shophouses — usually a little pricier than a basic Patong hostel, but with more character and better access to the town's café scene.
Meeting other travellers
Hostel common areas are one of the more reliable ways solo travellers end up meeting others — see our solo travel guide for more on this.
Keeping costs down beyond accommodation
