Hotel room type names explained

What 'deluxe', 'superior' and similar labels actually mean, and how consistent they are.

Hotel room category names like "deluxe," "superior" and "premier" aren't standardised across the industry — worth understanding what they typically signal and where they can mislead.

The general hierarchy

Most hotels use a rough ascending order — standard/superior, deluxe, premier/premium, then suite categories — but the exact naming and what separates each tier varies considerably between properties, meaning a "deluxe" room at one hotel might be roughly equivalent to a "superior" room at another.

What actually changes between tiers

Commonly room size, floor level or view, and sometimes small amenity differences (a bathtub versus shower-only, for example) — genuinely worth checking the specific room description and floor plan rather than assuming a category name means the same thing everywhere.

View descriptions

"Sea view," "partial sea view" and "garden view" are frequently used loosely — a partial sea view can sometimes mean a narrow sliver of ocean visible from one specific angle, worth checking recent guest photos rather than trusting the category name alone.

A reasonable approach

Read the specific room description and square footage rather than relying on the category name, and cross-check recent guest reviews and photos — the combination gives a far more accurate picture than the marketing label by itself.
