Resort, villa or hotel: which is right for you?

Matching accommodation type to trip style rather than just budget.

The right accommodation type in Phuket depends more on trip style than budget alone — each has a genuinely different day-to-day experience.

Hotels

The most flexible option — daily housekeeping, on-site restaurants, front-desk support, and no minimum-stay pressure. Best for shorter stays or travellers who want everything handled.

Resorts

Larger-scale hotels with extensive on-site facilities (multiple pools, kids' clubs, spas) designed so guests rarely need to leave the property — suited to families or anyone prioritising amenities over independent exploring.

Villas

Private, self-contained, and usually cheaper per person than a resort once split across a group — but with less daily service, more responsibility for your own meals and transport, and often a more isolated location. See our villas guide for more.

Serviced apartments and condos

A fourth option worth naming separately — more self-contained than a hotel, less isolated and staffed than a villa, generally the best fit for longer stays where cooking your own meals matters. See our serviced apartments guide.

A rough rule of thumb

Solo travellers and couples on shorter trips generally do best in hotels; families and groups of 4+ often get better value and more space from a villa; longer stays lean toward serviced apartments; anyone wanting a fully handled, activity-packed stay leans toward a resort.
