When the swell shows up
Green season (roughly May–October) brings the island's only consistent surfable swell, driven by the south-west monsoon — the opposite of Phuket's main tourist high season, which means good surf conditions often coincide with quieter beaches and lower hotel prices.
Where to surf
Kata and Kalim see the most consistent breaks, with Kata generally considered the most reliable spot for beginners and intermediate surfers. Nai Harn and a few other south-facing beaches pick up swell too, depending on conditions.
Lessons and rental
A handful of surf schools operate seasonally out of Kata, offering board rental and lessons for visitors wanting to try it without bringing or buying gear.
