With water on three sides, Phuket is built around boats, reefs and beach-based activities.
Snorkelling and diving
Nearby islands like Racha Yai, Racha Noi and the Similan Islands (seasonal) offer clearer water than the mainland beaches. Several dive operators on the island run PADI courses alongside day trips — see our diving courses guide for the full certification path.
Jet skis and parasailing
Widely available on the main beaches, particularly Patong. Jet ski scams involving disputed pre-existing damage are a well-documented issue — photograph and video the vehicle with the operator present before you take it out.
Surfing
Kata and Kalim see the most consistent swell, mainly during the green-season monsoon months (roughly May–October) — the opposite season to when the island is busiest with tourists. See our dedicated surfing guide for more on boards, breaks and lessons.
Sea canoeing
Guided sea-canoe trips through Phang Nga Bay's limestone caves and hongs (hidden lagoons) are a quieter alternative to a standard speedboat tour.
Wakeboarding and flyboarding
A dedicated cable park and several boat-towed operators offer wakeboarding and flyboarding beyond the standard jet ski and parasailing options — see our dedicated guide for details.
