Phuket's tropical climate and mix of beach, temple and jungle activities make packing fairly predictable once you know what you'll actually be doing.
Clothing basics
- Lightweight, breathable clothing — Phuket is hot and humid year-round
- At least one modest outfit covering shoulders and knees, for temple visits
- A light rain jacket or poncho if travelling in green season (May–October)
- Reef-safe sunscreen, particularly if you'll be snorkelling
Practical extras
- A dry bag if you're doing any boat trips or island hopping
- A physical or International Driving Permit if you plan to rent a scooter or car
- Cash in small denominations for markets, songthaews and street food
- A basic first-aid kit with rehydration salts, motion sickness tablets and any personal medication — pharmacies are widespread but having the basics on hand for a boat trip or late-night stomach issue saves a scramble
If you're diving or snorkelling
Your own mask, worth bringing if you have one and plan multiple snorkelling days, since rental mask fit varies. Certified divers should bring their log book and certification card rather than relying on a phone photo of it.
If you're travelling during Songkran
Pack a waterproof phone pouch and clothes you don't mind getting soaked — see our Songkran survival guide for the full picture.
What not to over-pack
Formal wear is rarely needed even at nicer restaurants in tourist areas — Phuket dress codes trend casual outside of a handful of upscale dining rooms.
