Phuket's time zone & managing jet lag

What time zone Phuket runs on, and practical tips for the adjustment.

Phuket uses Indochina Time (ICT), UTC+7, all year. Thailand does not observe daylight saving time, so the clock in Phuket itself never jumps forward or back. The confusing part is that the time difference with countries that do use daylight saving changes during the year.

Phuket time in one line

Set your phone to Bangkok or Phuket time and you are on UTC+7. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi and Phuket all use the same national time zone, so domestic travel within Thailand does not require another clock change.

Why the overseas time difference changes

Thailand stays on UTC+7 while places such as London, New York and parts of Australia change clocks seasonally. That means a memorised difference can be wrong a few months later. Use a live world-clock tool when scheduling an important call, remote-work meeting or airport pickup.

Australia and Phuket

Perth is usually only one hour ahead of Phuket because Western Australia is UTC+8 and does not use daylight saving. Sydney and Melbourne are generally three hours ahead during Australian eastern daylight saving and two hours ahead during standard time. Brisbane stays two hours ahead because Queensland does not change its clocks.

Europe and the UK

Phuket is several hours ahead of Europe, which makes the first morning easier for some travellers than the return journey. London is seven hours behind Phuket during UK winter and six hours behind during British Summer Time. Continental Europe is generally one hour closer.

North America

Travellers from North America face a much larger shift and often cross the International Date Line on the way. The practical effect matters more than the exact number: expect your body to want sleep at the wrong time for the first few days, especially after an overnight journey and multiple connections.

Before the flight

If your schedule allows, move bedtime and wake time slightly toward Phuket time for two or three days before departure. Do not sacrifice sleep to do it perfectly. Arriving already exhausted makes the adjustment harder than being a couple of hours out of sync.

Use light strategically

Daylight is one of the strongest cues for resetting your body clock. Once you arrive, spend time outdoors during local daytime and keep the room dark when you are trying to sleep. A morning beach walk or breakfast outside can help your brain accept that the local day has started.

Naps: useful but easy to overdo

A short nap can rescue a difficult arrival day, but sleeping for several hours in the late afternoon often guarantees a wide-awake night. If you must nap, keep it short and set an alarm. Then stay awake until a reasonable local bedtime.

Caffeine, alcohol and hydration

Use coffee to support the local day rather than extending your home-country schedule. Avoid large amounts late in the Phuket afternoon. Alcohol may make you sleepy but often worsens sleep quality, while dehydration after a long flight can make fatigue and headaches feel worse.

Planning the first 48 hours

Do not schedule your most expensive tour or a complicated island transfer immediately after a very long flight if you can avoid it. Keep arrival day simple, eat on local time, get outside, and aim for a normal bedtime. Put early-morning boat trips or major driving days later in the itinerary once you know how you are adjusting.

Remote work and calls home

Create recurring calendar events in the other person's time zone rather than manually converting each meeting. Double-check calls around March/April and October/November, when daylight-saving changes elsewhere can shift a familiar meeting by an hour even though Phuket's clock has not changed.

When tiredness is more than jet lag

Jet lag normally improves as your sleep and light exposure align with local time. If you become severely unwell, confused, short of breath or unusually weak, do not assume the problem is simply travel fatigue. Phuket has hospitals and clinics, and significant symptoms deserve medical assessment.
