Taking a dog or cat to Phuket is possible, but it is not a “turn up with a vaccination booklet” trip. Thailand treats live-animal entry as an official import process, and Phuket International Airport has an Animal Quarantine Station in the international-arrival flow. Start with Thailand's Department of Livestock Development (DLD) and your airline well before booking a pet's travel.
Thailand's DLD is the authority to follow
The DLD's Animal Quarantine and Inspection division controls import procedures. Its published process requires an import application in advance, assessment of the origin country's animal-health status, an import permit containing the applicable health requirements, and an official health certificate in English from the competent veterinary authority in the country of origin.
Do not rely on an old pet-travel checklist
Vaccination, testing, identification and certificate requirements can differ by species, origin and current disease controls. The DLD published a new announcement on live-animal import procedures in late December 2025, so a blog post or relocation checklist copied from several years ago is not a safe source of truth.
Start before you buy a non-refundable flight
The DLD's published general import process says the importer should apply at least seven days before import and confirm the exact arrival date with the relevant Animal Quarantine Station in advance. In practice, give yourself much more margin because veterinary appointments, government endorsements and airline space can take time.
Your airline has a separate rulebook
Government permission does not guarantee the airline will carry your animal. Airlines set their own rules for accepted species, breeds, crate dimensions, temperature restrictions, cargo versus accompanied baggage, connections and check-in. Confirm the entire itinerary, including any transit airport, before committing to a route.
Phuket Airport has animal-quarantine processing
Airports of Thailand lists Animal Quarantine Station processing in Phuket's international arrival procedure. That means you should have the original documents organised and accessible rather than packed deep in checked luggage. Follow the DLD/AQS instructions for where and when to present the animal.
Expect document and health checks on arrival
The DLD describes veterinary officers checking the documents and the animal's health before issuing the final import licence. The exact treatment of an individual pet depends on the permit and health requirements issued for that import, so do not promise yourself that entry will be instant or quarantine-free based on somebody else's experience.
Accommodation needs explicit confirmation
“Pet friendly” can mean very different things: some hotels accept only small dogs, some require deposits, some restrict rooms or public areas, and many do not accept pets at all. Get written confirmation for your exact animal, size and dates before arrival, and ask about cleaning charges and outdoor exercise areas.
Phuket's heat changes the daily routine
Hot pavement, high humidity and strong sun can make midday exercise uncomfortable or dangerous for dogs. Plan walks for cooler parts of the day, carry water and never leave an animal unattended in a vehicle. Accommodation with shaded outdoor access can be more practical than a room in a busy nightlife district.
Street dogs and local animals
Phuket has free-roaming dogs and cats in some areas. Keep your own pet controlled and avoid casual contact or fights. Ask a local vet about parasite prevention and any destination-specific health considerations before travel rather than assuming a home-country routine covers tropical risks.
Plan veterinary backup
Before arriving, identify a veterinary clinic reachable from where you will stay and save its details offline. Bring enough prescribed medication for the trip where legally permitted, plus a concise medical history if your animal has ongoing conditions.
Returning home can be harder than entering Thailand
Your home country may impose its own export certificates, testing, waiting periods or quarantine conditions. Australia and some other destinations have particularly structured biosecurity processes. Work backwards from the re-entry rules before deciding whether a short Phuket holiday with a pet is sensible.
For short holidays, leaving a pet home may be kinder
International flights, crates, unfamiliar accommodation, heat and border paperwork can be a lot for an animal. For a brief holiday, reputable care at home may be simpler and less stressful. Taking a pet makes more sense for longer stays or relocation when the logistics justify the journey.
