Standard precautions apply — reasonable caution at night in nightlife-heavy areas like Patong, sensible scooter safety (see our scooter rental guide), and the usual awareness around drinks in bars.
Where solo travellers tend to base themselves
Patong and Karon see the highest concentration of solo travellers and hostels, making it easier to meet people casually. Old Phuket Town is a good alternative base for solo travellers prioritising culture and café life over beach-and-bar socialising.
Meeting people
Hostels with common areas, group tours (particularly day trips to Phi Phi or Similan), and Muay Thai gyms taking short-term students are all natural ways solo travellers end up meeting others without much extra effort.
Eating alone
Common and unremarkable in Thailand generally — street food stalls and casual restaurants see solo diners constantly, with none of the awkwardness sometimes associated with solo dining elsewhere.
