Tipping in Phuket is much looser than in countries where a fixed percentage is expected on almost every service. A tip is usually a voluntary thank-you for good service, not a licence to add an automatic percentage to everything. The easiest approach is to check the bill first, tip selectively and use small cash when you genuinely want to recognise someone.
Start by checking the bill
Restaurants, bars, hotels and spas sometimes include a service charge. If one is already added, there is no need to mechanically add another percentage. You can still leave something extra for exceptional service, but treat that as a choice rather than a second compulsory charge.
Local restaurants and street food
At casual Thai restaurants, food courts and street-food stalls, tipping is generally not a formal part of the transaction. Paying the stated price is fine. If staff have been particularly helpful, rounding up or leaving small change can be a friendly gesture without turning a simple meal into a complicated calculation.
Mid-range and higher-end restaurants
In more tourist-oriented or upscale venues, international tipping habits are more common, but the service-charge line still matters. Read the receipt rather than assuming. If there is no service charge and the service was genuinely good, a modest discretionary tip is perfectly normal.
Cafes and bars
There is no need to tip every time you buy a coffee, beer or bottled drink. Tip jars may appear in tourist areas; using them is optional. For table service or a longer bar visit, leaving small change for good service is reasonable, especially if staff have spent time helping with food, drinks or local advice.
Hotels
Bell staff, housekeeping and other hotel employees may receive tips from guests, particularly in larger resorts, but there is no universal Phuket rate. Small cash given directly is clearer than leaving a large amount and assuming it will reach the person you intended. For housekeeping, a note can help make the purpose obvious.
Massage and spa services
Many travellers tip a therapist after a good massage or spa treatment. Check whether a service charge is already included and hand any personal tip directly to the therapist where practical. The price of the treatment, the type of venue and the quality of service are better guides than an imported fixed-percentage rule.
Private drivers and airport transfers
A private driver does not require a tip simply for completing the agreed trip. If the driver was punctual, helped significantly with luggage, waited through delays or provided especially good service, rounding up or adding a modest amount is a common way to say thanks.
Tour guides and boat crews
Guides and crews often put in more personal service than a simple point-to-point ride, so tipping is more common on full-day tours, private charters and diving trips. It should still reflect the actual service. Do not feel pressured into a large tip by a guide, booking agent or group member.
Taxis, ride-hailing and metered fares
For taxis or app-booked rides, paying the fare is sufficient. Rounding up for convenience is fine. Keep tolls, airport fees or other clearly disclosed charges separate in your mind from a tip; they are part of the transport cost rather than gratuity.
When not to tip
Do not use a tip to smooth over an unclear price, an aggressive sales pitch or a dispute. Confirm tour, taxi, jet-ski, rental and service prices before committing. If something feels wrong, deal with the underlying price or safety issue rather than paying extra simply to escape an awkward interaction.
Cash is usually simplest
Small baht notes are useful when you choose to tip because card terminals and app payments do not always offer a clean way to direct gratuity to the person who served you. Avoid creating change problems by trying to tip with a very large note.
A simple rule for Australians
If you are used to Australian tipping norms, Phuket does not require you to suddenly calculate a US-style percentage on every bill. Pay the stated price, check for service charges, and add a modest personal thank-you when someone has genuinely looked after you well.
