Do you need travel insurance for Phuket?

What a solid policy should cover, and where claims most often go wrong.

Travel insurance is one of the less exciting parts of a Phuket holiday, but it matters when a small problem turns into a large medical, cancellation or evacuation bill. The useful question is not simply “do I have insurance?” but whether the policy actually covers the risks in your itinerary — especially scooters, diving, water sports, pre-existing conditions and medical evacuation.

Why medical cover matters

Overseas medical care is not something to assume your home public-health system will pay for. A useful policy should cover unexpected medical treatment and have a clear emergency-assistance process. Smartraveller's current general guidance tells Australians to buy comprehensive cover and check medical and evacuation benefits before departure.

Medical evacuation can be the expensive part

Serious injuries or illness may require transfer to a different hospital or, in some cases, transport to another city or country. Check the evacuation limit, who decides whether evacuation is medically necessary and whether you must contact the insurer before arranging non-emergency transport.

Scooter and motorcycle exclusions catch travellers out

Phuket's road risk makes this one of the most important policy checks. Many insurers apply licence, engine-size, helmet, alcohol and activity conditions to motorcycle or scooter claims. Do not assume that buying a rental from a hotel or shop makes you insured. Read the policy wording before you ride and follow both Thai law and the insurer's conditions.

Diving, surfing and adventure activities

Scuba diving, freediving, jet skis, surfing, trekking and other activities may be included, limited or excluded depending on the policy and depth, certification or operator conditions. If an activity is a major reason for the trip, confirm cover in writing or in the policy documents before paying for it.

Pre-existing medical conditions

Disclose conditions exactly as the insurer requires. Some policies automatically cover listed conditions; others require assessment or an extra premium. Failing to disclose relevant information can create problems when you make a claim, even if the emergency feels unrelated.

Alcohol and drug exclusions

Policies can restrict claims where alcohol or drugs contributed to an incident. Phuket nightlife does not change the contract. Read the exclusion wording and remember that an insurer may investigate circumstances surrounding a road crash, fall, drowning or assault claim.

Cancellation cover starts before the flight

If cancellation cover matters to you, buying insurance soon after booking can be more useful than waiting until the day before departure. Smartraveller's buying guidance notes that early purchase can protect against some covered cancellation events that happen before travel begins.

Storms and known events

Insurance generally cannot be bought after a known event with the expectation that it will cover that same event. During monsoon season or when severe weather is developing, read the insurer's cut-off notices and policy wording rather than assuming every weather disruption is covered.

Lost phones, baggage and valuables

Check per-item limits as well as the headline baggage total. Expensive phones, cameras, jewellery and laptops can exceed standard limits. Keep receipts or other proof of ownership where practical, use hotel safes sensibly and report theft promptly if the policy requires a police report.

Rental vehicles and excess cover

Travel insurance rental-vehicle excess cover often applies to cars, not motorcycles, and may have country, licence or vehicle-type conditions. Read this separately from the medical section. It is easy to assume “rental cover” includes a scooter when it does not.

Save the insurer's emergency number

Put the 24-hour assistance number, policy number and emergency contact in your phone and somewhere offline. For major treatment, the insurer may want to speak with the hospital or approve costs. In a true emergency, get urgent care first, but contact the insurer as soon as reasonably possible.

What to compare before buying

Compare medical and evacuation limits, cancellation benefits, excess, pre-existing-condition rules, scooter and activity cover, baggage sub-limits and any age restrictions. The cheapest premium is not necessarily the cheapest outcome if the policy excludes the activity most likely to cause a claim.
